“A brilliantly knowing spoof.....an uproarious evening....You barely stop
laughing long enough to catch your breath.... rib-crackingly funny. Be ready
to laugh until the tears come.”
- Wall Street Journal
SIDES: The Fear is Real...
Actors. Auditions. Agony.
SIDES: The Fear is Real... draws from the true-life stories of working (and non-working) actors in New York. Mr. Miyagi's Theatre Company created the show several years ago as a summer project between friends. Since then, SIDES has become a cult hit, and has been produced three times, including a celebrated off-Broadway run at The Culture Project in 2005.
The show offers an inside look at the special "joy" of the audition process, but has succeeded largely because it strikes a chord with anyone who has found themselves in a situation where humiliation and embarrassment are the best things that can happen to you.
Production History
SIDES started out as an underground performance piece for friends and others in the theater community. In 2003, it went to The New York Internation Fringe Festival where it was a critical favorite. Mr. Miyagi's Theatre Company was awarded a Best Ensemble Award.
In 2004, Ma-Yi Theater Company, a mainstay of theater in New York stepped in to produce the first full New York production of SIDES, at P.S.122. Playing to packed houses, the show began to gather a loyal fan following of hip theater-goers looking for a fresh new comedy. It also marked Miyagi's first collaboration with director Anne Kauffman of The Civilians.
2005 saw the show move to Off-Broadway. Produced by Mr. Miyagi's Theatre Company in association with The Culture Project and Rel2 Productions, this was the most ambitious production of SIDES to date. And again, over the 10 week run, critics once again lauded the show's wit, sharp observations and consistently strong performances.
Mr. Miyagi's Theatre Company now travels to sunny L.A., where East West Players will present the show as the first show of its 2006-2007 season. For more information, go to East West Players.
